How old must a “tradition” be? And what or whom does it serve? Smashing tulips by bowling down wooden beams could certainly be an age-old Dutch tradition evoking nautical and mercantilist masculinity. (Tulips, originally from Turkey, were assimilated by Holland.) Perhaps it is.
